I had a wonderful childhood growing up on a farm with fresh air and freedom, plenty of exercise, and endless long hot summers outside (perhaps my glasses are slightly rose tinted, boy were those 1970s winters harsh!).
I had an awareness from an early age where our food came from, and we had a productive fruit and vegetable garden. I spent the first 17 years after college working in the pharmaceutical industry, but my interest in good food and good health finally led me to study nutrition at the renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition in London (ION). ION was founded by health expert Patrick Holford and is widely considered to be the UK’s leading centre for nutritional studies. After a three-year course I gained a Diploma in Nutritional Therapy in 2002.
Our digestive health is paramount because we are not only what we eat but what we can digest and absorb, so it seemed like a natural progression to study Colonic Hydrotherapy. I trained with Dr Milo Siewert, the founder of colonic hydrotherapy in the UK, who was by then in his 70s and still actively working and teaching. A true inspiration.
With a natural curiosity, little did I realise that these studies were only the start of my journey! Since then I have researched Functional Medicine and the use of laboratory testing to determine a person’s unique requirements such as vitamin D, fatty acids, minerals and adrenal stress levels, and multiple approaches to detoxification.
After having my second baby and feeling completely floored after a difficult pregnancy and birth, I came across Elwin Robinson who guided me to more consistent levels of energy. I love his mix of Eastern and Western wisdom, and eagerly absorbed his teachings which then inspired me to train with him to become a Results Coach. Rather than just passing on my knowledge I can work with my clients over a period of time empowering them to take consistent action and work out what to implement and when so that they get the result they want, after all anyone that wants to be their very best has a coach!
With this in mind I have recently (2016) studied Sports Nutrition with Brendan Brazier, a vegan triathlete, to learn about high net-gain nutrition and how to incorporate a plant based diet to help you develop a lean body, a sharp mind, and a sustainable energy metabolism, whether you are a professional athlete or simply looking to boost your physical and mental health.
The most important lesson I have learnt is that there is no magic bullet, our health is a jigsaw puzzle. Hydrating, alkalising, remineralising, correcting nutritional deficiencies (my vitamin D levels were chronically low – anyone working long office hours take note!), proper breathing, fresh air, exercise – they are all important. I am here to educate and guide you.
As well as working with clients at home and via skype, I am the nutrition expert at Yeotown, voted the Best Spa Retreat in the UK (www.yeotown.com).
For my professional integrity and your assurance, I belong to the Association of Registered Colon Hydrotherapists (www.colonic-association.org), The Complementary & Natural Healthcare Council (cnhc.org.uk) and have been awarded a Certificate of Competence in Nutritional Therapy Practice by the Nutritional Therapy Council (now named the Nutritional Therapy Education Commission). All a bit of a mouth full but these standards are important as they protect you.
